My childhood interest in birds has continued throughout my life:
Light pollution causing unnaturally bright skies,
Are influencing birds to start days earlier than ever.
Birds are vocalizing about 20 minutes earlier in the morning
And cease vocalizing about 30 minutes later in the evening.
From over 500 bird species in many continents,
Give researchers an actual look at how human-created lights
Are affecting worldwide the dailing lives of birds.
Unusual bird activity has been linked to unusual bird behavior,
One being a report of American Robins feeding their nestlings at night.
Recorded data is combined with satellite information,
Concerning light pollution as well as data on sunrise and sunset times.
This means that light pollution is extending birds' daily activities
By about an average of 50 minutes.
More light may allow birds to forage longer, providing more food for offspring.
Alternatively, the light may be detrimental by interfering with sleep or hormonal cycles.
Birds with relatively larger eyes were most sensitive to light pollution.
These include American Robins, Northern Cardinals, and Northern Mockingbirds.
Birds with smaller eyes, such as the Tufted Titmouse,
Eastern Bluebird, White-breasted Nuthatch, or Carolina Chickadee
Seemed not to be affected at all by light pollution.
Also, birds roosting in enclosed spaces such as a tree cavity,
Or a nesting box with opaque walls seemed less affected.
This study was outstanding because of both machine learning
As well as the participation of everyday people in science.
Using these new recording devices, there is a growing
Dataset of automated recordings of birds essentially collected by the public.
Questions and answers can now be analysed
At a far longer scale than ever before!
This records my life-long interest and love of birds,
And is manifested in these new and exciting studies!
